On my first attempt I tried blasting these funky Gem Cups with strobes, only to find that the white edges melt into the white background, not matter what. The next day when I returned to this conundrum the solution was quite obvious, that is, play with light and shadow. By having the light fall off quickly into the far background, the correctly illuminated object edges in the foreground have something to contrast against, darkness! Also in the third photo I used a strip light mask over the softbox.
